Left gate @ 6:50 with crampons and MSR's on pack. Light snow falling. Signed in @ 7:23. Trail from parking lot to base of Beckhorn/Dix trail was boggy and water logged from melting snow. Bare booted it to junction then donned trail crampons and began ascent @ 9:40. Snow ended at this time. As elevation gained trail turned to hard packed snow and ice. Difficult due to ice covered by new snow. Reached Beckhorn summit @ 12:15. Dropped pack and scampered over to Dix. Tagged and headed back to...

Left Clear Pond Gate @ 6:26 am wearing Hillsound Trail Pro crampons. Road was crunchy snow and ice. Sign in at TH @ 7:04. Head out to Lillian Brook with South, Grace, Macolm as my delusional goal. Make it to Slide Brook Lt @ 8:05. Stop and chat with group which had spent 2 nights @ LT and hiking Macolm, South, Grace on 1st day and Hough on 2nd. They were packing to leave. I asked about path from Lillian's Brook trail that leads to South/Macolm col. They said they broke trail on this spur so...

Mountains Climbed: Macomb, Carson and Grace
Date of Climb: 2/23/13

Trail Conditions: The road from the winter trail head to the summer trail head was hard packed and plowed in the morning but several inches of snow in the evening. The marked Elk Lake to Dix trail was packed fairly hard but snowshoes required to avoid Post Holing. The Slide Brook Herd Path up to the slide on Macomb was visible under six or so inches of snow but with six of us we packed it down pretty hard. The Macomb slide was a...

Mountains Climbed: Seymour
Date of Hike: 8/4/12

Trail Conditions: ...Trail to the Seymour herd path is in great shape with very little mud. Herdpath up to Seymour's summit has some mud, some blowdown and tons of roots in the trail especially in the steep areas.

Comments: Made this climb with my good friend John S (Barkeater) and his friend Mike F.
We had made this climb in March for my final winter 46 peak, however I wanted to reclimb it again in one of the non-winter season to make it my...

Sundog,

When last year did you make your attempt? Last May we used the Lillian Brook herdpath and the blowdown was incredible. It seemed as though every couple steps we had to discuss which way to go. I believe it was caused by a storm that passed through the night previous to our hike and was cleaned up shortly after we were there. Every other time I have been in the range all trails and paths have been clear and easy to follow, although the path to the E. Dix slide does require some...

My friend and I did it last year by hiking in and camping at the Slide Brook camp site on the night before, not far in with overnight stuff, hike the entire range and pick the camping stuff up on the way back out. It may cut off enough to make the day feasible for you. From there it's right up Macomb. We did the Hunters Pass trail on the way down from Dix but recommend the Beckhorn trail to save time. If it's hot, bring lots of water. There is water at Slide Brook.

Sounds like last year was a real adventure. You did not say that you would be camping so I will assume that you mean you want to do these as two day hikes. As day hikes the best way is to take the Elk Lake/Dix trail to the Herdpath for Macomb which starts right at slide brook which is just before the lean to. Go up Macomb, then Carson and then Grace and then back to Carson and then down to the Col between Carson and Macomb and then continue down the South branch of the Lillian Brook Trail and...

Last year when we did this we had to gain about 50 feet on wet rock before it became dry the rest of the way up, and that short bit resulted in plenty of cursing. I'd think when mostly wet the slide would provide ample opportunities for injury.

Wayne - thanks for the trail information. That is a pretty good loop for your first hike of the season. David and I looked down on the slide last week and could see that it is pretty steep up toward the top and would be nasty when wet. Good call on the herdpath. Ed

Hiked in to the base of East Dix slide on afternoon of 5/17. The South Fork of the Bouquet was close to full and flowing fast causing me to scout out different routes to cross which further caused me to lose and find the herdpath. The herdpath was mostly dry. Camped out at base of Slide overnight. On the 18th I attempted to scale the East Dix slide but found it to be wet and slippery. I abandoned this effort and followed the herdpath up the right side of the slide which took me around and...
